Sunday Streets to Great Streets: Enrique Penalosa

Meet Enrique Penalosa, former Mayor of Bogota, Colombia and internationally-renowned innovator in the fields of transportation, housing and land use for large cities, as he discusses how San Francisco can learn from international best practices in urban public space development. San Francisco’s successful Sunday Streets program is based on Penalosa’s wildly popular “Ciclovia” system in Bogota. Thanks to Mayor Penalosa, Bogota has also become an international gold standard for Bus Rapid Transit. Penalosa will discuss how San Francisco can accomplish and benefit from further improvements to our city’s public realm.
This event will also celebrate the launch of the San Francisco Great Streets Project, a new campaign to catalyze the return of our city’s streets to their rightful place as the center of civic life in this wonderful city by working with government, business, and neighborhood leaders to test, analyze and institutionalize placemaking.

Free Urban Cycling Workshop: Intro to Safe Cycling (Day 1)

This four-hour, in-classroom, introductory course is perfect for new cyclists and those want to feel more comfortable riding on city streets. The class covers the basics for how to choose the right bike and properly fit a helmet. Learn tips for the safest ways to ride in traffic, techniques to avoid or deal with road hazards and emergency maneuvers along with other useful gems of knowledge, like the best way to lock up your bike and how to use a bike in combination with public transit, and cyclists' legal rights and responsibilities.
Adults and anyone over 14 years of age are welcome, free of charge, pre-registration is required (sign up today); bring your lunch or dinner. No bicycle is needed for this class. Note: This class is the "day 1" course for League of American Bicyclists' Bike Ed Road I certification. |

San Francisco's Presidio: A Fresh Look

The transformation of the Presidio is accelerating, and changes to the forests, natural areas, architecture, and bike paths are worth a close up look. This tour of the Presidio's backroads is led by a Natural Areas program volunteer and SFBC member. Easy ride on pavement - be prepared to ascend twice to the Presidio's ridge line.

Seven Hells Bike Tour *

Hey masochists, get those granny gears oiled up -- Seven Hells is back with seven (and then some) of the City's most devilish climbs. Be prepared for some very strenuous climbs and long flat rides: Twin Peaks, Mt. Davidson, Ocean Beach to Legion of Honor, Seacliff and GG Bridge, Divisadero, Nob Hill, 21st St. in the Mission and Clipper. We'll be going around 45 miles (route as PDF). With breaks and a moderate pace, this ride should take around 4-1/2 hours. Strong riders only please. We will make every reasonable effort to stay together as a group.
