19th Avenue

The Missing Link

Overview

→ This project is being designed and cleared environmentally by the Bike Plan EIR, as the MTA's Project 8.1 - 19th Avenue mixed-use path, Buckingham Way to Holloway Avenue, and Project 8.2 - Buckingham Way bike lanes, 19th Avenue to 20th Avenue

At eight lanes wide and more than five miles long, 19th Avenue is one of the highest volume streets in San Francisco. It is also the primary route to San Francisco State University. Students, professors and employees wishing to approach SFSU safely by bicycle often ride on the sidewalk between Stonestown Galleria and the University. To reduce the chance of conflict between bicyclists and pedestrians, the Department of Parking and Traffic proposes to add bike lanes to a short stretch of Stonestown/SFSU connection Buckingham Way and widen the multi-use walkway between Buckingham Way and SFSU.

Project Proposal

  • Sidewalk Option 1: widens multi-use sidewalk from 10' to 15'
  • Sidewalk Option 2: creates 8' sidewalk, 2' buffer zone, and 10' shared use path
  • Sidewalk Option 3: extends the curb into 19th Ave, creating a 20' multi-use path
  • Buckingham Option 1: Removes parking and introduces bike lanes on both sides of the street
  • Buckingham Option 2: Retains parking, but only creates east-bound bike lane

Public Outreach

The SF Bicycle Coalition has met with neighborhood, civic, and merchant groups throughout the West of Twin Peaks neighborhoods to gather community feedback. Of course, we're always glad to get more input and stay in touch with the community, bicyclists and otherwise. For more information, please contact:
