"The joy comes when a child is balancing and riding on two wheels, and the Freedom From Training Wheels workshop still delivers that, often at an earlier age than through the use of training wheels."

Cesar Chavez Streetscape Redesign Rolls On
Cesar Chavez Streetscape redesign (between Hwy 101 and Sanchez Street) was approved at an SF Municipal Transportation Agency public hearing and will now go on to the full SFMTA Board for approval soon. The campaign for bike lanes on this portion of Cesar Chavez began nearly a decade ago, but this much-improved total streetscape redesign (a coordinated effort of the SF Planning Department, Department of Public Works, Public Utilities Commission, and Municipal Transportation Agency) will realize a complete street that is safer and works better for everyone. This project will install bike lanes from Sanchez Street to Hwy. 101, which will connect with the already-approved bike lane project on eastern Cesar Chavez, creating continuous bike lanes all the way out to Illinois Street. It also includes traffic calming, sidewalk bulb-outs and permeable medians and trees to help green and beautify the corridor.
Video: How People Experience Streets
This week's video gives you a fascinating exploration of the work of Professor Donald Appleyard, author of Livable Streets, who researched how people experience streets with different traffic volumes. He helped to quantify and measure things like relationships amongst neighbors, gathering places and what people consider their home. These sorts of perceptions and data are already being gathered on Market Street as it undergoes a series of pilot trials as well as areas where our City's newest plazas and parklets are being added. Watch the video here.
