Biker Bulletin News
The most wonderful time of the year:
Winterfest is This Sunday
We hope to see you for our annual Winterfest Party this Sunday, Dec. 5 -- it's the biggest and best event for people who love biking. Come party with 1,000 of your friends and raise a glass to the newest bike lanes at the SF Bicycle Coalition's 15th Annual Winterfest member party, auction, art show and fundraiser.
Green Bike Boxes Coming to Market Street
As revealed on San Francisco Streetsblog last week, the City is planning to install green bike boxes on Market Street late this year or early in 2011 at the following locations: westbound Market at 9th Street, Van Ness Avenue and Gough Street, and eastbound at South Van Ness Avenue and 9th Street. These bike boxes are the next phase in testing the concept, following on the success of the green Scott Street bike box on the Wiggle. The SF Bicycle Coalition is pleased to see the City move forward with this important trial on our busiest bicycle thoroughfare. However, this is just one step toward a better Market Street. The SF Bicycle Coalition has shared detailed plans with the SFMTA and the Mayor for continuing the green separated bike lanes the length of lower Market Street and is working hard with these partners to create a concrete timeline for these important changes.
Vote Today for Our Board of Directors
We need you to cast your vote today in our annual Board of Directors election. We rely on the voices of our members to decide who'll be responsible for ensuring that the Bicycle Coalition achieves its mission of promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation by developing the strategic direction of the organization, overseeing management and our financial health, raising funds for our work, and representing us in San Francisco's many communities. Each year, half of the 15-member board is elected to a two-year term by our membership -- that's you. Your vote is an important signal of confidence in the Board. Please read the candidate statements and vote today. Voting ends Friday, Dec. 17th.
Under Highways and Over the Hills, the Links are Adding Up
New bike lanes continue to pop up in neighborhoods across the city, even during these cold and rainy months. Last week, the installation of soft-hit posts went in to create a block of separated bike lanes on Division Street. This week, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency paint crews are heading west to work on the second phase of the Laguna Honda bike lane project from Portola to Woodside, which will create an important link between neighborhoods across Twin Peaks. After that, crews will focus on the Glen Park project, making it safer and more inviting to access the BART station by bike.

Let's Get Visible
December is upon us, the nights are getting longer, and your friends at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition don't want you to get caught in the dark without bike lights. California law requires a white headlight, a rear red light or reflector and yellow/white reflector on sides and/or pedals (reflective whitewalls count). If you don't have the lights you need, use your SF Bicycle Coalition membership card to get a discount on lights at your favorite bike shop. See sfbike.org/discounts for locations.

Video: I Bike Fresno's Biking = Joy
Fresno has been working hard to implement their new ambitious Bike Plan, which would add nearly 400 miles of bike lanes across the city. After years of building wide, high-speed roads, Fresno's traffic engineers have realized that they can reduce the number of lanes without increasing congestion and have been creating Valencia-style 'Road Diets' all over town.
