"San Francisco bicyclists are abuzz now that a $3.7 million bike bridge has been completed... 'There are great new bike projects on the horizon," said Mary Brown, a member of the San Francisco Bike Coalition. "Having the bridge is a fantastic step forward.'"

SFBC Pavement Quality Task Force Scores Victory!
Have you noticed that your ride down Market St is less bumpy as of last week?
The SFBC's new Pavement Quality Task Force recently saw it's organizing efforts pay off with a smoother Market Street. SFBC Task Force volunteers surveyed Market St. between Van Ness and Embarcadero and came up with a list of 25 of the worst surface irregularities. These were forwarded to the Department of Public Works, who responded rapidly, and as of May 5th, had filled 20 of these major potholes. In addition, the pothole Task Force has been meeting with Public Works and we are drafting a set of recommendations to prioritize road maintenance along the citywide bicycle network.
The DPW has pledged to send an inspector out within 24 hours after receiving a pothole complaint, and fix the problem within 48 hours after that. Let's take them up on that! To report potholes, you can e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org, or call 695-2100. To join the SFBC's Pavement Quality Task Force, e-mail Josh Hart at email@example.com.

City College Chooses Cars Over Education
City College is currently completing a Master Plan to guide future campus development at its Ocean Avenue Campus. Unfortunately, the Master Plan and EIR propose to use academic funds, instead of parking fee revenue, to add nearly 500 parking spaces to the existing 2,200 spaces. The College provides no similar subsidy for transit users, although 44% of students, faculty and staff use Muni & BART to get to school.
In addition, both the EIR and Master Plan largely ignore bicycle planning, under the logic of 'few people currently bike to campus, so there's no reason to do anything to encourage more people to do so in the future.'
The City College Board of Trustees will be voting this Wednesday on whether to certify the EIR, so please e-mail them TODAY! Tell them not to build additional parking without first implementing aggressive policies with specific goals and timetables to:
E-mail your comments to Peter Goldstein, Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration (mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org) and Ken Rich, Planning Department staff (mailto:Ken.Rich@sfgov.org). Please also copy Jeremy Nelson from Transportation for A Livable City at email@example.com
New Cesar Chavez Bike Bridge Dedicated Next Week!
Celebrate with us! An official dedication ceremony for the newly-built Cesar Chavez Bicycle Bridge is scheduled for the eve of Bike To Work Day on Wednesday, May 19th at 3pm. The bridge, which runs over Cesar Chavez Street and under Highway 101, provides a safe alternative for crosstown bicyclists who would otherwise have to "shoot the rapids" to get from the Mission District to the eastern end of the city. This $3.7 million bicycle bridge is the latest link in the Citywide Bicycle Network and was the subject of a recent "ChronicleWatch" item: http://tinyurl.com/3e8lv
Contact Mary Brown if you'd like to be a participant in this press event (firstname.lastname@example.org or 431-BIKEx24).
