SFBC Biker Bulletin

August 16, 2011

"This tragic incident is a stark reminder that everyone -- whether you're biking, driving, or walking -- has an urgent responsibility to be safe and respectful on our shared streets. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition will continue to remind the growing number of people biking of their responsibilities and rights through our popular Bike Education classes, as well as working with the police to educate all road users."
-- Leah Shahum, SF Bicycle Coalition, "Pedestrian Hit By Bicyclist Last Month on the Embarcadero Dies," SF Streetsblog, August 11, 2011.

Members Only: Help Shape Our Strategic Plan This Week

The SF Bicycle Coalition's priorities are guided by our Strategic Plan, an important road map for how we work to promote bicycling for everyday transportation. As we wrap up our current five year plan, we are thinking about how to set ambitious, achievable goals for the next five years.

Current members are invited to help shape the Strategic Plan for 2012-2017 at one of our upcoming member meetings this week: Wednesday, August 17, 6-8pm or Saturday, August 20, 10am-12pm. Both will be held at the Women's Building at 3543 18th St. between Valencia and Guerrero Streets (complimentary bike valet will be provided). You must be a current member to attend. Space is limited! Please RSVP at sfbike.org/rsvpstrategicplan.

Tour de Fat Arrives on September 24

Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 24 when Tour de Fat rolls back into town with its ballyhoo of bikes and New Belgium Brewery beers! This all-day, all-green FUNdraiser benefits the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council. See details at sfbike.org/fat.

  • Volunteer to pour beer, sell merchandise, check IDs and valet park bicycles while helping to raise thousands of dollars for the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. All volunteers get a free Tour de Fat T-shirt and a free beer token! Sign up to volunteer now!
  • Would you trade a car for a bicycle? Make Tour de Fat a day you will never forget when you trade in your car for a shiny new bicycle as your reward! And, not just any bike -- a New Belgium, fully-loaded, hand-crafted, Fort Collins-built commuter bike and trailer! Interested?! Submit a video of two minutes or less with your story about why you have decided to trade your car for a bicycle. Complete details can be found at newbelgium.com/trade.

Cesar Chavez Street Needs You

Residents in the Mission and Bernal Heights neighborhoods are thrilled to see work starting on the sewer replacement project on Cesar Chavez Street from Hampshire Street to Sanchez Street. The construction activity may be disruptive over the next 2 years, but the SF Bicycle Coalition will continue to work with the Department of Public Works to keep bike traffic flowing as smooth as possible. Of course, after the work is done, a planted permeable median, improved sidewalks and crosswalks, and bike lanes will follow, creating a better link for getting around town. The SF Bicycle Coalition is proud of our members and volunteers, groups like CC Puede, and former and current Supervisors for helping bring this long-discussed project forward.

While that project rolls forward, things are a bit troublesome on the eastern end and the SF Bicycle Coalition needs you to come speak up and help advocate for a safer Cesar Chavez between Highways 101 and 280. After years of community meetings and outreach as part of the Bicycle Plan, the bike project that was slated to go on the ground in June of this year was delayed. We at the SF Bicycle Coalition want to see the community's vision of a continuous, comfortable bikeway on the eastern end of Cesar Chavez on the ground by February, and need you to come to the Community Workshop and speak up for this near-term project and ideas for long-term improvements to this street: Wednesday August 24, 6-8pm, Good Samaritan Family Resource Center, 1294 Potrero Avenue. Contact Neal if you have any questions.

Community Meetings Along the Bay to Beach Bikeway

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition's Connecting the City vision is moving ahead with two upcoming community meetings for projects on the popular Bay to Beach route. The SFMTA is holding community meetings to discuss separated bikeways on JFK Drive (between Stanyan and Transverse) and Fell and Oak Streets (between Scott and Baker Street):

JFK Drive Separated Bikeway Community Meeting -- TONIGHT!
Tuesday, August 16, 6:30pm-8pm, San Francisco County Fair Building, 1199 9th Ave. (At Lincoln Way)

Fell and Oak Streets Separated Bikeway Community Meeting
Tuesday, September 13, 6:30pm-8pm, San Francisco Day School, 350 Masonic Ave, (at Golden Gate)

From earlier community workshops and neighborhood meetings, support for continuous, separated bikeways for both of these projects is strong and the SF Bicycle Coalition is looking forward to the active community discussions around the specific designs at the meetings. These two projects together will help the huge and growing number of San Franciscans who bike get to work, cultural attractions, school and home again safely and comfortably on a major route for many San Franciscans.

You can review the SFMTA's design options for JFK Drive here, presented at the first community meeting in June. The community meeting for the three blocks of Fell and Oak Streets will be the first time the public gets into the details for these long-awaited improvements.

We will be live-tweeting both workshops, so check out our Twitter feed if you cannot attend.

Sunday Streets Warms the Heart of the City, Heads to Western Addition

Thousands enjoyed the Civic Center and the Tenderloin in a whole new way this past Sunday on bikes, walking, roller skating, hula hooping and more. Thanks to the nearly 100 volunteers who helped make this past Sunday Streets a huge success! The SF Bicycle Coalition is proud to partner with Livable City and the SF Municipal Transportation Authority for Sunday Streets by recruiting and training 100+ volunteers for every event. Sunday Streets heads to the Western Addition and North of the Panhandle neighborhoods on September 11 from 11am-4pm.

Four ways you can help make the Western Addition Sunday Streets a success:

  1. Street Teams: Have a few daytime hours September 7-10? Help hang hundreds of No Parking signs along the route to keep it clear for event day. Sign up by emailing sundaystreets@sfbike.org.
  2. Volunteer at Sunday Streets: Volunteers get a free lunch and t-shirt, as well as the pride of knowing that you helped make Sunday Streets possible for thousands of San Franciscans. Sign up now at sundaystreetssf.com/volunteer.
  3. Help the next generation learn to bike: Teach kids to pedal at the Freedom From Training Wheels Workshop at Sunday Streets. We will train you. Email Grace to volunteer.
  4. Talk about our work to people at Sunday Streets: Join the SF Bicycle Coalition under the orange tent at Sunday Streets and talk to people about our work! If you are a trained Bicycle Ambassador, email Tessa.

Volunteers and Interns Needed

Volunteer with the Great Streets Project! We rely on volunteers to collect surveys and conduct bike/pedestrian counts that help us evaluate the impact of streets projects around the city and make the case for more improvements to the bicycle and pedestrian realm. If you are as excited as we are by the expanding success of parklets around the city -- with 16 parklets on the ground, the iconic Powell Promenade, and the newest version of mobile parklets in Yerba Buena -- we need your help!

Volunteer shifts are 12-2pm and 5-7pm, August 17, 20, 27, and 31 (Wednesdays and Saturdays). Read more about these street projects and volunteer opportunities at sfgreatstreets.org/volunteer or email info@sfgreatstreets.org to sign up for a shift.

Internships: Looking for a summer/fall internship where you'll work hard, learn valuable skills and work with a team of passionate staff and volunteers? Apply for an internship with the Great Streets Project.

Help Design BART's Train Cars of the Future

BART is designing all-new cars to replace its aging fleet of cars and now is the time for better bike ideas. The public is getting its first look at detailed concepts for BART's Fleet of the Future, new train cars designed by BMW Group DesignworksUSA to replace the oldest fleet in the nation.

BART wants your input on these concepts! How should bicycles be accommodated inside the cars? Imagine an open space about 40 inches wide by 70 inches long on some of the BART cars to accommodate bicycles. How would you design it? What kind of rack or other mechanism would you use to park bikes efficiently? Could BART make it more comfortable for everyone by providing a comfortable spot for bikes out of the aisles and doorways? The SF Bicycle Coalition wants your ideas. See the BART website for details of open house events where you can preview preliminary designs of the next-generation BART trains, with 3 interior concepts and 1 exterior concept on display, in addition to a video simulation of the new trains.

Video: Separated Bikeways in Bogota, Colombia

In 1998, under former Mayor Enrique Penalosa, Bogota, Colombia started to develop a system of separated bike/walkways. Fast-forward to 2011 and this Streetfilms video show that Bogota now has over 180 miles of separated bikeways and bike riding has reached a transportation mode-share of 5%, in a city of 8 million people that's quite a lot. Bogota began the world-wide movement for Ciclovia in the 1980s which inspired SF's own Sunday Streets. Mayor Penalosa expanded the concept with these miles of ciclo-rutas, connecting all parts of the city every day of the week. Check out our own Connecting the City vision for 100 miles of continuous bikeways here in San Francisco.
