Did you know you can vote early each weekday at City Hall 8:00 am - 5:00 pm?
The John Avalos for Mayor Campaign will host a 'Bike the Early Vote' party
Thursday Oct. 27th 12-1, and watch your bike while you vote.

JFK Drive Bikeway Approved!

The JFK Drive bikeway project was approved! On Thursday, October 20th after many months of campaigning, the Recreation and Parks Commission voted unanimously to approve 1.5 miles of separated bikeways on both sides of JFK Drive between Stanyan Street and Transverse Drive.

We are working to ensure that this important project, which is part of the heart of our Connecting the City Bay to Beach route, will be built and ready for you to use in the coming months. Over 250 members sent heartwarming letters of support of this project, and nearly two dozen of you took time out of your schedules to voice your support at the hearing - it's this kind of support that help these projects move forward. Please take a moment to send a letter of thanks (scroll down) to Mayor Lee and others for their steadfast support of this project. Your thanks mean a lot!

Next up for Bay to the Beach: Fell and Oak Streets. We want to extend a huge thank you to those of you who opened your wallets and made a contribution toward our work to improve bikeways on Fell and Oak streets. There was an overwhelming response from more than 300 members and your investment in our savvy bicycle advocacy helped us surpass our goal! We will continue to push for the implementation of safe routes along Fell and Oak streets by the end of 2011. Again, thank you for being involved!

Bicycle Safety and Education Week

If you've been waiting all year to sign up for a class on urban riding, or have been looking for an excuse to convince your best friend/partner/coworker/favorite barista to learn how to ride a bike, this is your week! We're in the middle of Bicycle Safety and Education Week, October 23rd-30th, and seats are still open for tonight's class scheduled at Congregation Sha'ar Zahav at 16th and Dolores, as well as those on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

In partnership with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and funded by the Transportation Authority, we're holding six free adult bike education classes in just one week in Sunnyside, Richmond, Mission/Castro, the Waterfront and downtown, all designed to help you or someone you know learn how to ride comfortably in San Francisco.

Bicycle Safety and Education Week will ensure that San Franciscans citywide have the opportunity to learn safe and respectful riding practices. The two-part education courses are designed for both new and experienced riders, people considering trying biking and anyone simply interested in street safety. The SF Bicycle Coalition has already taught thousands of San Franciscans how to ride safely and respectfully on our city streets. Sign up today! Classes fill up fast.

One More Link for Better Biking on McCoppin and Portola

Thanks to the SFMTA for completing the Portola and McCoppin Street bike lane projects in the last few weeks. The McCoppin area projects include many connections to Market Street and Octavia Boulevard -- while the bike space has been there for a few years, it is great to have the paint finally down marking this important bike safety improvement.

Up in the Twin Peaks area, bike lanes have been finished on Portola Drive between O'Shaughnessy and Burnett. These bike lanes connect to recently striped lanes on other segments of Portola, Clipper, and Laguna Honda Boulevard. Thanks to all our members who helped build support for these bike lanes --- and we encourage you to take a moment to thank the city for their work in bringing these safety fixes to the pavement.

These projects were part of a decade-long plan to double the miles of bike lanes in San Francisco. As with all bike lane improvements, the SF Bicycle Coalition is proud to work with the city and neighbors when these safety improvements are rolled out across San Francisco.

Haight Street Improvements Move Forward

Last week the SF Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) approved a set of changes to the eastern end of Haight Street. These changes will improve Muni operations and bring many safety enhancements to the street, particularly the complex intersection of Haight, Gough, and Market Streets. By converting this portion of Haight from one-way to two-way, and implementing a red-paved transitway on the south side of the street, SFMTA will provide the Muni 6 and 71 lines with a rational and direct route (presently these lines jog around to Page Street), significantly speeding up the inbound trip for tens of thousands of passengers each day. This smart reconfiguration also means that Page Street will be better for bicycle traffic, eliminating conflicts with Muni buses.

Congratulations to the SFMTA for developing, refining and adopting this smart set of street improvements, and hooray for Walk SF and Livable City for their solid and energetic advocacy! Read more about the changes (including diagrams) in this Streetsblog story.

Thank You for a Wonderful Season of Sunday Streets

The SF Bicycle Coalition is proud to partner with Livable City for Sunday Streets. Together we recruited and trained hundreds of volunteers to open miles and miles of streets on nine Sundays and in seven San Francisco neighborhoods, from East to West! Upwards of 20,000 people of all ages experienced these open streets by bicycling, dancing, rollerskating, doing yoga and hula hooping.

A huge shout out to all the volunteers who monitored intersections, provided local access to neighbors, set up and removed equipment, and made sure everyone had a great time! A special thank you to our Sunday Streets Volunteer Coordinator, Matt Wisniewski, and our Sunday Streets interns, Laureen Briggs, Paula Chiu, Mel Fonseca and Lupe Gonzales, for their excellent leadership and hard work running the SF Bicycle Coalition's Sunday Streets Volunteer Program. We couldn't have done it without you!

The SF Bicycle Coalition helped dozens of youngsters learn how to ride without training wheels at the Sunday Streets events through our Freedom from Training Wheels program. More than 40 other groups provided free programming for the Sunday Streets events including bicycle rentals, free bike repair, youth bike safety skills and more.

Plans are already underway for Sunday Streets 2012, so take a moment to share your thoughts about what you'd like to see next year, and stay tuned for details.

Video: Riding Predictably on City Streets

In honor of Bike Education and Safety Week, we bring you our video from 2004 that we produced about how to ride predictably and safely. The video covers the basic topics found in our "Intro to Safe Cycling" courses we're holding all week. It's also a great snapshot of how many bike improvements we've seen over the years -- check out Valencia Street before its current widened sidewalks and smooth pavement and notice the Golden Gate Bridge sidewalks without a barrier. This video is a great reminder of our work advocating for safer streets and educating bike riders for nearly a decade. Watch our classic Safety Video!
