SFBC Biker Bulletin
February 14, 2012
"If it seems like there are more bikes about town -- especially on Market Street -- it's not your imagination, or even your double vision. The city's annual citywide bike count for 2011, which was released Tuesday, found a 7 percent increase over 2010, and a whopping 71 percent increase over the last five years."

City Bike Counts Reveal 71% Increase in Ridership
You can see it every day in the bike lanes -- biking is on the rise in San Francisco, and now the San Francisco Bicycle Count Report has the numbers to prove it. Since the city began counting bike riders in 2006, the number of people bicycling has risen by 71% according to the SFMTA's annual study.
Join Our 2nd Street Campaign to Make Biking and Walking Safer
Almost three years ago, the SFMTA pulled aside the bike safety project for 2nd Street between Market Street and King Street. This project would have installed bike lanes on this stretch - part of the citywide bike network and an important route for those getting to work, home, and regional transit (Caltrain and BART). The SF Bicycle Coalition, along with Supervisor Jane Kim and other community leaders were saddened to learn that federal funding that was meant to install bike lanes, pedestrian safety improvements, and other streetscape elements on 2nd Street had to be reprogrammed to other city projects because of funding deadlines, despite the SF Bicycle Coalition's advocacy to get this project back on track during the last year.
Speak Up for Employee Bike Access this Thursday
Do you wish you had a safe place to lock your bike or would prefer to just bring your bike into your office during the workday? Well, the Employee Bicycle Access Bill, sponsored by Supervisor John Avalos, will be heard this Thursday and we need your stories to show how this important legislation will improve your life. This bill will reduce barriers to help allow commercial tenants (employers) to dedicate space for their employees to store their bike inside their office.
Feeling the Bike Love from a Wonderful Love on Wheels
At least four new couples pedaled off just in time for Valentine's Day after the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition's Love on Wheels, our annual dating game for bike-lovers, last Wednesday at Public Works. Both contestants and raffle winners were treated to hot dates provided by our amazing sponsors, and one lucky member rode off on a new Masi Soulville bicycle. Check out the sfbike.org/love for photos of the event.

Welcome to our new Valet Bicycle Parking Coordinator
Fans of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition's justifiably famous Bicycle Valet Program can give a hearty welcome to our new Valet Bicycle Parking Coordinator, Tyler Vaughn. Tyler comes to the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition with a breadth of events logistics and volunteer organizing experience, most recently working with the San Francisco AIDS foundation. Tyler is deeply immersed in the San Francisco bicycling community, and has been a frequent valet bicycle customer himself.
Slight Increase in Dues for Additional Household Members
While a basic one-year membership will remain at $35, the dues for additional household members will increase slightly this month to $15 per additional household member. This is the first increase in additional household membership dues since at least 2003!

Green Connections Project Kick-off *
The Green Connections project is setting out to enhance pedestrian and bicycle access to parks, open space and the waterfront, by re-envisioning SF streets and paths as green connectors that can be built over time (a perfect complement to Connecting the City). Come out to this kick-off meeting and learn more about the project and how you can plug in to help create green connections across the city. Green Connections is a collaborative effort of the San Francisco Planning Department, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, San Francisco Department of Public Health and the Mayor's Office of Housing, in partnership with the San Francisco Parks Alliance, Walk San Francisco and Nature in the City (learn more at the Green Connections website).

SF Bicycle Coalition Energizer Station
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is trying to get the city to fix one of the scariest parts of biking for thousands of San Franciscans: the three blocks of Fell and Oak Street between Scott and Baker. Trained Bicycle Ambassadors will be out with energizing coffee and snacks and talking to neighbors and people riding bicycles about why the city needs to prioritize safety and implement bikeways on these blocks this year.
