SFBC Biker Bulletin
March 19, 2013
This just in: Bike share pilot coming to the Bay Area this August!
It’s finally here! This week, March 18-22, BART will be implementing a weeklong pilot removal of the bike commute blackout period. Your SF Bicycle Coalition and more than 100 of our amazing volunteers are out on the platforms this week helping to make this pilot a success. If you’re riding BART, please help everyone understand that bikes are not allowed on the first three cars of BART during this pilot. You can help ensure the success of the pilot by following the rules of the BART bike pilot and being a great ambassador for bikes on BART.
How you can Help Improve Polk Street this Week
This week, the SF Bicycle Coalition needs your help in building support to make getting around on Polk Street safer. We’ve been advocating for years for the City to repave Polk Street and to make biking and walking safer on this street that has seen an unfortunate history of crashes involving people biking and walking.
Ride SF Streets Car-free: CycleSF on April 28
On Sunday, April 28 you can join thousands of bicycle riders of all levels in the inaugural CycleSF to traverse our city together. This costume-clad fun ride (not race!) explores San Francisco’s diverse neighborhoods from the seat of a bike. The ride is a celebration of cycling and our city's parks. Think Bay to Breakers on bikes, for a cause we all love.
Nominations Open For Bike-Friendly Business AwardsHelp celebrate and encourage San Francisco’s wonderful bike-loving businesses! As part of the Bike to Work Day City Hall press conference on May 9, the SF Bicycle Coalition and Mayor Edwin Lee will award San Francisco’s 2013 Bicycle Friendly Business Awards. The awards will recognize San Francisco companies large and small that are making it easy for their employees to bike to work, and in doing so, attracting high-quality employees.
If your office has bike parking, lockers, Bike Commuter benefits, or other great bike-minded perks, your business should be nominated and praised! Nominations close April 25. Submit your business today: www.sfbike.org/friendly. See photos from 2012 Winners.
More Community Bike Builds Coming!
Our Bike Build Convivios have been immensely successful so far, and we're looking to you to help keep the momentum going! At our Convivios, which we hold in collaboration with different community partners, like People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER), we assist local youth in performing basic bike tune-ups and repairs for bikes that they get to ride off on! Our next event is scheduled for Sunday, March 24 at the Bike Kitchen. Visit our signup form to see the volunteer opportunities that are available! We are also busy organizing a special Convivio during Earth Day SF on April 20, at Civic Center Plaza.

Sign up to volunteer at Bike to Work Day!
Believe it or not, Bike to Work Day is right around the corner: Thursday, May 9. This is the biggest biking day in San Francisco every year and it takes nearly 300 volunteers to make this event a success. Volunteers help out in the morning, brightening commutes with free coffee, or in the afternoon, cheering folks on as they bike home. But why wait until May to get involved? We’re looking for volunteers to help plaster the city with posters about the event. Check out all the great ways to volunteer and sign up here.
