Tax-deductible Donations for Better Bicycling

The mission of the SFBC Education Fund is to provide education, training and services for San Francisco Bay Area residents who commute by bicycle or ride bicycles recreationally.

Did you know that you can support better bicycling while still getting a tax-deduction for your gift? By contributing to the SFBC Education Fund, which is our 501(c)3 tax-deductible organization, you are supporting the cause to make San Francisco more bike-friendly.

Some current programs and projects supported by the SFBC Education Fund:

  • Free Urban Bicycle Education classes & "how to ride a bike" workshops for adults
  • "Freedom from Training Wheels" for small children
  • Good Roads Campaign to help our city fill potholes and provide safe pavement conditions
  • Give & Get respect public education to all our 11,000 members and the general public
  • Frequent driver education (taxis, commercial vehicles, city-car share organizations, Muni bus drivers) on how to share the road safely with bikes
  • Bike to Work Day event hosting and promotion
  • Business consultation on how to make businesses more bike friendly
  • Valet bike parking at over 75 outdoor city-wide events & at all SF Giants home games

If a tax-deductible donation helps you, it also helps us! We can only be successful at making San Francisco a great biking city if we have the resources to do so. Thanks for your support.

For tax-deductible donations, checks must be written to the SFBC Education Fund.

While the SF Bicycle Coalition (SFBC) is a 501(c)4 organization, which means that contributions to the SFBC are not tax-deductible, your support of the SFBC Education Fund (see above) will be used for all of our important organizational needs except for direct political lobbying and candidate endorsements. This includes all of our crucial education work, community outreach, member support, general operational expenses, organizational development and maintenance.

History: In 2000, the SFBC's Board of Directors, with feedback from members, decided that it was critically important for our organization to endorse local political candidates who actively supported bike-related issues. Thus, under Section 501(c)(4) of the tax code, the SFBC was created and uses some of its contributions to carry out direct political lobbying. Money contributed by individuals (i.e. membership dues) to the SFBC is not tax-deductible.

Meanwhile, the SFBC Education Fund, the 501(c)3 group, was created. As explained, this organization fulfills important work for the bike cause and allows you to make tax-deductible contributions.
