Free Urban Bicycling Workshops

We offer a variety of adult bicycle education and safety courses, both our 4-hour "Traffic Skills 101-1" and 1-hour "Introduction to Safe Cycling" as well as our Family Biking Classes.

These classes are great for anyone who is considering bicycling, or wants to learn how to more safely bicycle, and gain familiarity with the rules of the road. Both classes, varying in depth, are a great way to get familiar and comfortable with bicycling (or driving) in San Francisco. No bicycle, or experience is needed, and courses are free and open to anyone age 14 years or older. To obtain a disability-related accommodation, including auxiliary aids or services, please contact Marc Caswell at (415) 431-2453 x302 or marc@sfbike.org. If possible, please allow at least 72 hours notice to help ensure availability.

If you are an adult looking to learn how to balance, turn, and stop on a bike, you'll want to see our Adult Learn to Ride Classes; if you are a parent looking to teach your child how to balance on a bike, check out our Freedom from Training Wheels Program.

The SF Bicycle Coalition offers two types of Introductory courses. Both courses teach the rules of the road, how to safely bike with traffic and people walking, and cover how to have a bike for everyday riding.

The Traffic Skills 101-1 course is a four-hour presentation using the curriculum of the League of American Bicyclists and includes great detail. This course is required to take our On-Road course, where instructors take you out on a group ride in traffic. This is the perfect course for anyone already riding to hone their skills, or people interested -- but intimidated -- by urban traffic.

The Intro to Safe Cycling course is a one-hour presentation covering the most basics of how to pick the right bike for everyday riding in SF, the rules of the road, and route planning. This course is a great introduction for people who are considering bicycling, or looking to brush up on skills.

Disability Access

All of our classes are held at locations that are wheelchair accessible. To request real time captioning, a sign language interpreter or other accommodations for a disability, please contact Marc Caswell at marc@sfbike.org 415-431-2453 x302. Providing at least one week advance notice will help to ensure availability.
