Fell and Oak Construction Delays

Nearly half a year after the SFMTA Board of Directors gave unanimous approval to the Fell and Oak Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project, critical safety features continue to be delayed.

The SFMTA announced recently additional delays in the construction of the Oak Street bikeway to accommodate private construction. In the meantime, people biking on Fell Street still contend daily with a bikeway that needs the approved permanent physical separation to protect them from fast-moving automobile traffic. With Spring here, we are asking our members to tell the SFMTA that we need the Oak bikeway by May 9, Bike to Work Day, for the sake of public safety

We are looking for motivated members to come to the next SFMTA Board of Directors meeting every other Tuesday at 1 pm at City Hall and request immediate project completion, particularly progress on the Oak bikeway. Email Chema Hernández Gil at chema@sfbike.org if you are able to support this project by speaking up.

If you cannot make the SFMTA Board meeting, send an email to Mayor Ed Lee, SFMTA Director Ed Reiskin, Supervisor London Breed and Supervisor Eric Mar and express your support for permanent physical separation on Fell Street and the larger Oak and Fell Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project. Your voice will help put this project back on track.

Why is physical separation from car traffic on Fell Street important to you? Add anything else about yourself. As one of the hundreds of thousands of people who bike in San Francisco, I am writing to ensure that the construction of the Fell and Oak Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project is not further delayed. While the plastic posts help on Fell Street, permanent separation is needed and strong progress needs to be made on Oak Streets immediately. Thank you for caring about my safety. Sincerely,

Original Construction Schedule

Download the SFMTA's final proposal here. This project is funded by the voter-approved Streets Bond which the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition helped get approved in 2011.

• October 2012: Construction of the Fell and Oak Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Project starts.
• October-November 2012: Fell Street separated bikeway, crosswalk enhancements, parking additions.
• Winter 2012: Oak Street separated bikeway, crosswalk enhancements, traffic signal modifications.
• Spring-Summer 2013: Corner bulbouts, greenery, physical barriers in the bikeway.

Thank you to our members, Supervisors Olague and Mar, Walk SF, North of Panhandle, Alamo Square and Lower Haight Neighborhood Associations, the Wigg Party and others for helping shape this project over the last year, sending in hundreds of support letters, and coming to the hearings to speak up for this project.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition worked hard to build the necessary support for this project over the last year and a half. We reached out to people biking in the area and spent countless hours reaching out to residents and businesses near Fell and Oak streets. We went door-to-door to all 50 businesses multiple times over the last year, delivered over 500 fliers to resident's doors and tabled at community events - resulting in hundreds of letters of support from businesses and residents.
