Light Up the Night!
Of course, lights not only helps those on bike see and be seen, they’re also required by law. California law (CVC 21201) mandates a white front light and red rear reflector or light, as well as yellow or white reflectors on sides and/or pedals (reflective whitewalls count).
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is proud to partner with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) for Light Up the Night, an annual bike light distribution campaign.
With our amazing volunteers, we install hundreds of white front lights and red back lights on bicycles for people riding in the dark. To make sure that the bicycle lights go to those who need them the most, we keep the giveaway locations a secret.
The campaign corresponds with the darkest months of the year, starting in November, right after Daylight Savings takes effect, and runs through December.

Please note that the lights must be installed on a bicycle, thus you must have a bicycle with you to get a light.
If you're an SF Bicycle Coalition member riding in the dark without lights, we hope you will use your Membership Discount to buy lights at one of our partner bike shops!
