Do It Yourself!

Who says you can't beat City Hall?

San Jose/Guerrero neighbors took back their street -
and so can you!

Turning your neighborhood street into a quiet, calm place to live may seem like a daunting task. But it doesn't take a big personality or a lot of money to overcome the status quo--just a commitment to the things you care about.

Gillian Gillette, mild-mannered citizen turned activist says, "I am basically a very, very shy person. I never thought I would be able to overcome my shyness and I saw no reason to try. But I could overcome my shyness to help my kids be safe."

By starting small, and investing a little time and energy in getting to know your neighbors, you can take an ugly sea of concrete and turn it into a thing of beauty. In the process, you'll begin to realize that your city can be whatever you want it to be. See our list of neighborhood groups below.

The San Jose-Guerrero Coalition has produced a detailed guide "Street Parks" guide to greening a street median--one way to calm traffic and increase the livability of your street, not to mention bring your neighborhood together for the common good!
