San Francisco has cracked Bicycling Magazine's Top 10 list of best cycling cities in North America. The top ten are (from #1): Montreal, Portland, Tucson, Seattle, Toronto, Austin, Denver, SF, Philadelphia and Chicago.
SF was named the "home of the nation's most politically active cyclists." Was it ever a question? The honor was achieved by the relentless efforts of dedicated cyclists, as well as great natural conditions.
Meanwhile, we lag embarrassingly behind Austin, Seattle and Portland, where bikes are accommodated on all buses; behind Philadelphia, where 300 miles of bike lanes are in the works; and though technically ahead of Chicago, Mayor Richard Daley's goal that bikes will account for 10% of one-person trips under five miles by 2000 is impressive.
