Bike to Work Day, May 18th, 1999 Photos by Vince Vitale

This yearÍs Bike to Work Day was, quite truly, the best yet. The SFBC set up 11 Energizer Stations around the city to give free treats to cyclists. And we saw more people than ever biking. There was a 65 percent increase in bicyclists on Market Street at Van Ness: 380 eastbound bicyclists were counted between 7:45 am and 8:45 am last year, and 628 bikes were counted during the same hour this year. We almost edged out the number of cars this year: 708.

Dozens of volunteers made Bike to Work Day the huge success that it was this year. Special thanks to everyone who helped out at Energizer Stations, stuffed bags, handed out flyers, and oh-so-much more.

We also appreciate the support of Jim Brunberg and Box Set, Blazing Saddles, PeetÍs Coffee, NoahÍs Bagels, Starbucks, and RIDES for Bay Area Commuters.
