Bike Program Report

BIKE SHORTS: DPT Executive Director Stuart Sunshine and Bicycle Program staff joined the Mayor, Supervisors, and other department heads, riding on Bike to Work Day. DPT took eastbound bicycle and car counts at Market St. at Van Ness Ave. (7:45 a.m.-8:45 a.m) on Bike to Work Day this year and last year, showing a large bicycle increase. In 1999: 628 bikes, 708 cars. In 1998: 380 bikes, 688 cars. Staff completed new citywide Bike Route map in time for Bike-to-Work Week. DPT staff met with SFBC to discuss bike lane extension on Market St. from Octavia to 8th St. ISCOTT approved tow-away lanes on Market Street (eastbound in the a.m. peak from McCoppin to Valencia Sts. and westbound in the p.m. peak from Gough to Octavia Sts.).

BIKE LANES: DPT reports that it cannot assign more Parking Control Officers (PCOs) to patrol the Valencia Street bike lanes during nighttime peak when most double-parking occurs because many PCOs are assigned downtown to control intersections so that Muni vehicles are not delayed.
