Safety First On Buses

You may notice some more respect from Golden Gate Transit bus drivers. At the SFBC's request, Michael Kirchanski, Transportation Superintendent of Golden Gate Transit, issued Safety Bulletin 99U on December 7, 1999, reminding drivers that bikes are allowed "in the middle of a traffic lane."

The bulletin reproduced San Francisco Police Chief Fred Lau's 1998 bulletin citing Vehicle Code section 21202 and included a graphic showing the right way to pass bikes in a narrow lane (by changing lanes) and the wrong way (the dreaded squeeze play). Kirchanski asked bus drivers to "please yield to bicycles whenever necessary and in accordance with Section 21202."

The SFBC is working with Muni to issue a similar safety bulletin to its drivers.
