Golden Wheels Awards Party Honors, Celebrates By Dave Snyder

Enjoy one of our best parties of the year, while honoring great achievements at the annual Golden Wheel Awards. Presented at a gala ceremony Thursday, September 21st at Fort Mason, the awards honor people whose work reflects the mission and nature of the SFBC's activism as being inclusive, grassroots, innovative, and volunteer-based.

Betsy Thagard, founding Executive Director of Walk SF and former SFBC Board Member, will receive one of this year's awards. Thagard energized pedestrian advocacy through Walk SF, the organization she created from scratch and helped to reframe the debate about pedestrian safety. And it is to a great extent thanks to her volunteer efforts that we are able to celebrate one of our biggest victories of the past year: the creation of the city's first comprehensive community-based traffic calming program!

The Mission Merchants Association, an early, strong, and unwavering supporter of the Valencia Street bike lanes, receives our other Golden Wheel honor this year. The Mission Merchants Association serves as a model for other merchant groups in their insistence for safe streets for pedestrians and bicyclists as an important prerequisite for a healthy urban business climate.

The Award Ceremony is Thursday, September 21st from 6pm to 9pm. By special invitation from the National Park Service, we are returning to the beautiful Quarters 4 of Fort Mason, with a rare and treasured view of Aquatic Park and Alcatraz. The $50 ticket which includes wine and hors d'oeuvres helps to raise funds for the SFBC's activist work. No member is turned away for lack of funds, though. Contact Mary Brown, 431-BIKE, x-1, for admission in exchange for volunteer help.
