SFBC Sponsor Pre-Race Ride On the Car-Free Course by Dave Snyder

Before the Grand Prix on September 9, the SFBC is sponsoring a pre-race noncompetitive recreational ride dubbed the Great San Francisco Bike Ride.

From 7am til 8:30am on race day, riders will have the closed streets of the eastern five-mile loop of the racecourse to themselves! The course will be open to families who want a fun, noncompetitive ride, and to folks who want to challenge themselves on a closed course. Imagine racing the course on your own bike, then watching the professionals do the same course later the same day (for 125 miles!). The ride will be promoted by KGO and Tailwind Sports, and is a benefit for the SFBC's campaign for safer streets for cyclists and motorists.

SFBC sponsorship of the pre-race ride is a major boon to the SFBC. In addition to the funding, the major media publicity will help educate the public, including a large number of recreational riders, about the value the SFBC provides in promoting cycling and a more livable city.

Registration for the ride is $20 for members, $25 for non-members, which includes a membership in the SFBC or the Bay Area bicycle coalition of your choice. Registration for children under 18 is $10.

The SFBC needs scores of volunteers to help manage the ride, including data entry for the registrants, a web programmer to create the registration web site for us, and lots of volunteers on the day of the event to act as ride marshals and safety monitors. What better way to experience the excitement and thrill of this first-ever San Francisco Grand Prix than to work behind the scenes with the SFBC!
