Howard St. Striped! by Tube Times Staff

After two years of working enthusiastically for Howard St. bike lanes, we can now celebrate by riding enthusiastically on the new Howard St. bike lanes! Check them out for yourself-between 5th and 11th Streets. Striped in mid-May, they are the city's newest bike lanes, and some of the toughest to get approved (rejected in 1998 by the Parking and Traffic Commission). Members of the SFBC's SOMA committee met for two years and did door-to-door outreach to win support for the lanes, which were championed at the Board of Supervisors by Supervisor Chris Daly (photo right, wearing a tie).

The next step is to extend the bike lanes eastward from 5th Street. Then, combined with the existing Folsom St. bike lanes, we'll have a great east-west connection through SOMA. Call to get involved in this next campaign: 431-BIKE ext. 2, or see www.sfbike.org.

Another victory in SOMA is Board passage of new bike lanes on 7th St. between Townsend and 16th St., as well as a block-long extension of the King St. bike lanes, near the ballpark.
