Noon Bike Movie: Breaking Away *

The SF Public Library is celebrating the 2008 Tour de France with "Les Bicyclettes", a series of free films every Thursday in July. This week, enjoy Breaking Away (1979, 100 min.) — Local boy Dave and his "cutter" pals fight boredom and destiny in this great American tale of two wheeling in the heartland. You will cry (but they'll be happy tears). Free!

Cycle For The Sea *

Thu., Jul. 24 | Golden Gate Park to Monterey/Carmel (over four days)

The first annual Cycle for the Sea will ride from San Francisco to Monterey to raise awareness and money for the Surfrider Foundation, fighting the battles that face our oceans, waves and beaches. Enjoy the coastline car-free and see some of the most beautiful spots from the saddle of our bikes. This will cover about 50 miles per day from Thursday to Sunday, July 27 at a modest pace, so you have to be fit, but not a serious cyclist. They'd like you to come for the full time, but feel free to join in or bail out at any point. They'll camp in Half Moon Bay State Park, Santa Cruz, and Monterey/Carmel. Cost: $120 entry, which covers all of your food, lodging, bicycle needs, the support van (with carbon offsets!), etc. See www.cycleforthesea.org for more info.

Bike Ed - Day Two: On The Road

Sat., Jul. 26 | 10am-4pm, Park Branch Library, 1833 Page St (at Cole)

This six hour on-road course provides an opportunity to put into practice what was learned in the day 1 Street Skills course, and thus complete the League's Bike Ed Road I certification. We will be practicing emergency maneuvers, and riding in various traffic conditions to test your knowledge of vehicular cycling skills. Open to adults 14 and over. Bicycle, helmet and pre-registration required. Please also bring your lunch. Prerequisite: Day 1 Street Skills Course.


Southwest Bike Network Tour!

Sat., Jul. 26 | 11am; Balboa Park BART Station - Lower Level, next to the Concession Truck

Join your southwest cycling compatriots on a July 26th Bike-A-Bout in the southwest corner of town. We'll be taking a look at several major bicycling corridors and discussing plans and next steps to improve them with bike lanes, traffic calming, and other infrastructure changes. Bike lanes on Ocean? Phelan? Better connections to SFSU? This ride is for you. We'll start at the Balboa Park BART (lower level by the concession truck) and finish up with a picnic in a grassy park along the way. Bring lunch or something to share. Everyone welcome! Bike Commuter-cation Day*

Sports Basement is hosting a Bike Commuter-cation Day to eliminate barriers and to give people the confidence they need to start commuting by bike. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the various bike paths in the City, hear a talk given by SFBC on 'How to Bike Anywhere in SF', learn how to do basic bike maintenance such as changing a flat tire, how to lock a bike properly, manage your clothing while biking to work, and talk to various community groups and municipalities (i.e. SF Bicycle Coalition, MUNI, BART, CALTrains, etc.) for commuting information. There will be the opportunity to win raffle items that include: bicycles, helmets, clothing, bags and other bicycle commuting related items.

The Bike!Bike! Annual conference of community bike projects is in San Francisco this September 25th-28th. A Fund-raising benefit party will feature live music and raffle of bike paraphernalia. Critical Manners: a revolutionary act of courtesy. Come put the nice back in the bike world with critical manners! A helmet-wearing, bell-ringing, blinkie-sportin' good time for you and all your bike friends. Practice synchronized signaling, stopping at stop signs and NOT blowing red lights. Critical Manners is a great introduction for riders who haven't ridden in an urban setting before as well as experienced riders who enjoy group rides. Different Spokes Monthly Jersey Ride *

Come join Different Spokes (DSSF), the San Francisco Bay Area's GLBT cycling club for our monthly Jersey Ride, held the second Saturday of each month. You do not have to have/wear our jersey to join the ride, all are welcome. The ride offers different distance and level options. The ride starts from Peet's in the Castro. There are three options so you can go at your own pace

Bike Kitchen Wheel Building Class *

If you're ready to take your wrenching skills to the next level, there's no better way than by learning to build your own wheels! The Bike Kitchen is featuring a two-session class in which students will build one wheel from scratch. NOTE: You will need to bring your own hub, rim, and spokes. The Bike Kitchen can give you advice on what to pick up or you can stop by your local shop. This two-session class will take place at the Bike Kitchen on Monday, August 11th and Monday, August 18th from 6pm-9pm. Bike MS: Waves to Wine 25th Anniversary Ride: Day 1 *

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Northern California Chapter will hold its annual Bike MS: Waves to Wine Ride from September 13th to 14th to raise more than $1.5 million for critical MS research and vital programs and services. Day 1 goes from SF to Rohnert Park, and you'll be able to fuel up and stay hydrated approximately every 12 miles at rest stops, along with a lunch stop. Each day is 75 miles but will also feature a shorter option of 40-50 mile route for the recreational cyclist as well as a longer century for those who like the challenge.
