Meet Miri. She just started biking in San Francisco six months ago, and like most of us, she’s hooked on the convenience of commuting by bike. She’s biking almost everywhere now—to work, to go grocery shopping and for recreation on the weekend. As a new rider, Miri offers an interesting vantage point on the many new changes to our streets. We caught up with her to check in about how her first Bike to Work Day event was, and how she’s liking the new protected bikeway in JFK Drive.
How was your Bike to Work Day experience this year?
Fantastic. It took me 50 minutes to get to work, it normally takes the same amount of time taking Muni, it was a lot more refreshing and I very accomplished when I made it. I was not very athletic previously, and biking has helped me get in better shape. I established the goal to bike to work once I have got my bike, and I have been training for it. For instance, riding on challenging terrain, getting familiar with the route, practicing hand signals, etc. Now I can go grocery shopping, laundry, and many other places on my pretty bike.
What is your experience biking on JFK Drive with the new separated bikeway?
A smooth ride. It is so safe that I keep telling my friends how much effort the city and SF Bike Coalition have put in for us. I also think its great that there is the car-free play space on the weekends that allows the community to enjoy the public space to the max.
What other streets would you like to see improvements on?
Market street, bumpy and crowded. It is a little challenging for newbies like me to share the road with buses and cars.It would be ideal to have a complete route 30 bike lane, so everyone can bike from Ocean Beach to Embarcadero easily.
