The Ferry Building Farmers Market draws tens of thousands of people each week, and the organizers want to encourage more shoppers to arrive by bike. Starting this Saturday, June 5, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, the Port of San Francisco and local sponsors are teaming up to offer free, secure Bike Valet Parking at every Saturday Market from 8am-2pm.
The bike lanes along The Embarcadero and the Market’s sustainable mission make it a perfect location for valet bike parking. “We are excited that the farmer’s market at the Ferry Building is the first in San Francisco to offer this service and the Port is committed to providing environmentally sustainable transportation options,” said Dan Hodapp of the Port of San Francisco. “The people who bike to the market will appreciate this service, and it will likely encourage more people to bike to the Market every Saturday.”
The number of people biking in San Francisco is at record highs, in recent years there has been a 53% increase according to city counts, and Valet Bike Parking is a smart way to host events without overwhelming city streets with vehicle traffic. “Bicycle Valet is like a coat check for bikes,” says Renée Rivera, Acting Executive Director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, a nonprofit that promotes the bicycle for everyday transportation. “Just show up, hand over your bike to a friendly bike valet, get a bicycle claim ticket and go shop at the Ferry Building Farmers Market. We’ll keep a close eye on your bike until you come back.”
People young and old and families with kids are expected to bike to the market and take advantage of this free service. “Our family is so excited about the valet bike parking, which will make it easier for us to bike to the Market,” says Lainie Motamedi, a mother of two. “We love shopping at the Ferry Building Market, it’s a great family outing, and now we’ll able to bike there and know that we have a secure place to leave our bikes.”
The secure bike parking service is open year round on Saturdays from 8am-2pm for all Saturday Ferry Building Farmers Markets, and is located in Harry Bridges Plaza across the street from the Ferry Building. “The secret to easy parking at the Ferry Building is to ride your bike,” says Rivera.
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition provides secure bike parking for numerous events throughout San Francisco. October’s three-day Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park sees more than 1,500 bicycles parked each day, last August the Bicycle Coalition parked 3,100 bicycles at the 3-day Outside Lands Festival and each Giants’ home page sees hundreds of bicycling fans.
The Ferry Building Bike Valet Service is sponsored by Absinthe Brasserie & Bar, Arlequin Cafe, Alix Marduel + Tom Lockard, Rickshaw Bagworks, Pacific Waterfront Partners, Port of San Francisco and Walkup, Melodia Kelly & Schoenberger.
