Jean Fraser, Chief of the San Mateo County Health System talks about the new Townsend Street bike lanes.
How have the Townsend bike lanes improved your commute?
I love the new bike lanes! I ride to Caltrain to get to work in San Mateo about four days a week, and Townsend was always a little scary, with pedestrians without sidewalks, bikes, taxis, shuttle buses, and cars all trying to maneuver thru the unregulated, unmarked space. Now, there is clear space for everyone, making bike riders and peds, and even taxi drivers and car drivers, much happier. Truly, we all now “share the road.”
What’s your favorite thing about getting around San Francisco and San Mateo by bike?
How reliable it is and the fact that it brings some fun and exercise into my otherwise stress-filled and busy days. Plus, I love to amaze people when I walk into a meeting in a suit with a helmet under my arm!
What’s your favorite destination to bike to in San Francisco?
I have no single favorite destination, I just love riding around the whole city. The best part is all the people i run into (not literally!) Who I can easily stop and say hello to because I’m on a bike. And the ease of parking!
Also, the last few years the number of people biking has increased so dramatically — there are practically bike traffic jams! It makes me feel part of such a wonderful community. What I want now is a whole set of separated bike lanes like the ones on Market Street so my children can ride around town safely and experience the freedom and joy that i do.
