Here in the land of the fog, summer isn’t necessarily beach season. But the salt-air definitely beckons in the land of the Barbary Coast, dock-squatting sea lions and the crab fleet, not to mention a portion of the 500-mile shoreline bike route known as the San Francisco Bay Trail. And your bike might be the best way to put the bay back in your Bay Area experience.
You can even see underneath, at one of the Bay Trail’s premier roadside attractions, the Aquarium of the Bay, on June 18 as it throws its first Bike to the Aquarium Day. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition will provide free valet bike parking from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and pedaling patrons will receive half off admission. Aside from the usual chance to view a range of bay residents – from tiny anchovies to massive sevengill sharks – in their watery homes and witness lunch time for the bat rays, the event will feature a Bike Expo with raffles and demonstrations, as well as a showcase of electric bikes. It all started with Bill Cunningham, the 80-year-old fashion maven who has biked around Manhattan, photographing street-level fashion for the last 40-odd years. Now the subject of a documentary, “Bill Cunningham New York,” his example was my inspiration: Instead of offering do’s and don’ts for appropriate Bike to Work Day apparel, why not cruise the streets of San Francisco and report on current bike commuting styles?
Outside the Embarcadero Center Cinema, I spotted my first target: Lisa Torres wore a flared skirt, mini-boots with heels and a black leather jacket. The final touch: She was pushing a bike with flowered panniers.
Torres said, “What I wear to work is what I wear during my bike commute,” a 40-minute ride to her research job for the U.S. government. She banishes the idea that a bike ride automatically requires a shower and change of clothing: “I have to say sweat has never been a problem,” she says, adding with a smile, “no one has ever complained.” Read the rest of this entry »
