Providing affordable transportation for those who need it, and promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation for all San Franciscans.
Transportation is the second biggest expense in a family budget, and families in San Francisco feel that cost acutely. Biking is an accessible, affordable choice for those looking to avoid high transportation costs. The SF Bicycle Coalition has been working with community groups around San Francisco to organize Community Bike Builds (called Convivios in Spanish) and together providing donated bikes to neighborhood residents.
Our Community Bike Builds are a great model of a cooperative, community-driven collaboration. We reclaim unclaimed and abandoned bikes from the SFMTA, BART, the SFPD and other agencies, which are then repaired with the help of our volunteers. Neighborhood residents sign up with our partner organizations in advance to participate and receive a bike. They begin by spending a few hours learning how to repair and care for their new bike, complete a bike education class, and leave with a new, affordable, healthy and fun way to get around town!
Partnerships with neighborhood and community organizations such as PODER and POWER make Community Bike Builds possible. Our partners help us to find space, reach out to local residents and secure funding. Each event is an opportunity for residents to come together and refurbish reclaimed bicycles for individuals in their community that will benefit from affordable, healthy transportation. Our events are an opportunity to learn about biking in a participatory manner with volunteer wrenchers and neighbors.
