And the Bike and Roll To School Winners Are…

Congratulations to Britt Gardner, winner of the raffle for the EdgeRunner family bike donated by XtraCycle, BionX and The New Wheel Electric Bikes! The commute from her home in Bernal Heights to her daughter’s school in the Excelsior then to work downtown just became a lot easier!

SF Bicycle Coalition staffers have enjoyed showing off the EdgeRunner as a promotion for Bike and Roll to School Week while using it to haul gear and to introduce options for family biking to parents. Don’t worry if you missed the chance to check out the EdgeRunner bike – we’ll have other bikes to test ride at future Sunday Streets. Congrats to Britt, and to all the families that are rolling together. Take a look at the EdgeRunner bike in action!

Bike and Roll To School organizers were also invited to nominate a school staff member to become San Francisco’s Bike and Roll to School Champion. Each of the nominees serves as a “Roll Model” by riding his or her bike to school while also otherwise promoting healthy transportation within the school community.

This year’s Champion is Allison Shoule, a PE teacher and Safe Routes To School Liaison at Leonard Flynn Elementary. Allison is passionate about healthy transportation and school organizing, and very passionate about her students. She promotes biking, walking and rolling within the bigger picture of arriving on time while also honoring the unique situations of every child. She led a six-week walk and roll challenge at Flynn with raffle prizes that engaged parents, students and teachers alike.

The six-week event culminated in an inclusive, exciting Bike and Roll Day  at Flynn, where 98 participants joined in, and parents led bike trains with 10-12 students. Bike To School Champion awardees receive a complimentary SF Bicycle Coalition membership, gift cards, and our admiration for their commitment to both biking and education.

School Champion runners-up are Willie Ablao, 3rd grade teacher at McKinley Elementary, and Cami Okubo, Argonne Elementary School Principal. Kudos to all the nominees and all who participated!
