SF Bicycle Coalition & St. Anthony’s “Pair Up” for Bike-By Sock Donation

UPDATE: The Bike By Sock Donation yielded 500 pairs of socks! Thanks to everyone who pedaled by and donated socks for homeless Veterans on Memorial Day! You can still donate clothing to St. Anthony’s online.

On Friday, May 23, St. Anthony’s and the SF Bicycle Coalition are teaming up for San Francisco’s first Bike-By Sock Donation. We’re calling on the thousands of morning commuters to pitch in and donate new socks for a homeless person as a simple and practical way to give back.

Socks will be collected in barrels on Friday, May 23 next to the bike counter on Market Street between 9th and 10th streets and be given away in St. Anthony’s Dining Room throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

This Memorial Day, St. Anthony’s Dining Room anticipates serving 3,500 meals, over a thousand meals more than its daily average. Executive Barry Stenger remarked, “Memorial Day makes for a perfect storm in St. Anthony’s Dining Room: volunteers can be hard to find, it’s the end of the month so our people are low on funds, and other meal programs are closed.”

When you donate new socks to St. Anthony’s, you can help make life healthier and pain-free for homeless and low income folks in San Francisco. Socks make a huge difference in the lives of our guests: “My skin gets dry from the cardboard & cold—thank you all.”

St. Anthony’s needs 10,000 pairs of socks a year! With nearly 3,000 riders passing by the Market Street bike counter every day, we could really help them stock up in time for their busiest day of the year! Hope to see you tomorrow morning!
