Meet Simon, a Dedicated Valet Bicycle Parking Volunteer

Have you used the SF Bicycle Coalition’s Valet Bicycle Parking service? Simon Lee has likely parked your bike! He’s been volunteering to park bikes with us since 2005. It’s passionate, dedicated folks like Simon who help make our programs possible.

You’ve been volunteering with the SF Bicycle Coalition since 2005. What motivated you to start volunteering?

I volunteer often for many events that champion a cause or activity that I enjoy or believe in because of the opportunity to contribute in making a difference and for the camaraderie of the team effort on a community level.

What has been your favorite volunteer moment?

One favorite moment would be during a Light up the Night bike lights installation, when I know that the cyclist who rode up without lights will be a lot safer as a result of our SF Bike Coalition efforts. I cringe at the thought of cyclists riding after dark without lights.

You’re one of our most dedicated Valet Bicycle Parking volunteers. What keeps you coming back to volunteer with Valet?

Volunteering with bike valet is extremely personal for me after having had three bikes stolen in SF. Bike theft is the major deterrent for me in not using the bike sometimes, so helping other cyclists feel safe about parking their bikes will hopefully get more people to use bikes for transportation. Plus, there is always the remote chance/hope that my 2006 Litespeed Siena titanium road bike stolen in 2012 might be brought in for valet, and I can try to reunite with the bike perfectly sized for me on which I rode some very special and epic rides.

What do you do when you’re not donating your time to the SF Bicycle Coalition?
I work cycling, running and triathlons, as well as other event staffing and brand ambassador gigs. Also, I volunteer regularly for about a dozen other organizations and events (most notably for Breathe California and the American Lung Association).

What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering with us?
Definitely volunteer, donate or get involved with the SF Bicycle Coalition if cycling is part of your life and if you enjoy spending time with like-minded people. There are lots of different volunteer opportunities to match your skills and interests, plus great support from the staff!
