SFBC Biker Bulletin
October 23, 2007
"Proposition H needs to be rejected, unless San Francisco wants to
bulldoze bus stops and trees in residential neighborhoods and perch high-rises
atop 10-story parking garages, a la Houston or Las Vegas, in its downtown.
There is a better way."

Will You Let Traffic Win Over Transit?
Our answer is a resounding "NO!" We need your help with our Transit not Traffic campaign to beat the deceptive Prop. H and to pass Prop. A. There are only 14 days left until the Election, and the SFBC needs to turn out a bigger-than-ever number of volunteers to stop what the Chronicle calls "the most dangerous measure on the ballot."
Thanks to grassroots energy from volunteers like you, we have called thousands of absentee voters and outreach flyers are smoking off our copy machine. Check out these great photos from our Protest at the Gap last week with our friends from the Labor movement and other Yes on A/No on H activists. But we need more help. Do not let billionaire Republican Don Fisher bring 20,000 new cars onto our streets, slowing transit and worsening conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians! (Thanks to photographer Adam for capturing the Yes on A superhero.)
Here are 6 ways we need your help in the next 14 days:
No matter what your schedule is like, we'll find ways to plug you into the Transit not Traffic campaign, so please contact Rachel at 431-BIKE x302 to sign up to help!
Hey, You're Throwing an SFBC Party This Sunday!
Yep, you sure are! It's the 3rd annual SFBC Member Party! Bring your favorite snacks or drinks to share this Sunday, October 28 at Dolores Park from 1pm to 5pm. And it's going to be great! Why? Because you have invited all of your fellow SFBC bike pals to join us for fun in the park.
Drop on by to have a mellow time with the SFBC Staff and fellow members. Bring frisbees, a blanket, and a snack or beverages to share. We'll be at picnic tables 7 and 8, just west of the playground, along the paved pathway. Got questions? Contact Kate.
Light Up the Night with Bike Blinky Lights!
On Thursday, November 1st, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is teaming up with MTA to give away hundreds of bike lights to cyclists traveling along the city's major bike corridors. The Bike Light Give Away corresponds with the end of Daylight Savings Time. We want to increase rider visibility with the darkening hours -- lights are a key piece of safety gear! Volunteers with handy fingers will attach blinkies to bikes that do not have lights at six giveaway locations: Market St. @ Duboce, Howard St. @ 8th, Valencia St. @ 17th, Valencia St. @ Cesar Chavez, McAllister St. @ Webster, and Polk St. @ California. Tell your friends who don't have lights! Spread the word to kids on your block! Download a poster from our website and put it up at your school, library, or neighborhood coffeeshop. Please note: we are targeting cyclists who do NOT already have lights. You must have a bike with you on November 1st to receive a light. For more information, see our Light Up the Night page.
Winterfest -- Bikes! Gear! Beer! Action and You!
Is your calendar marked for Sunday, December 2nd? Do you happen to be looking for a new bike? How about the perfect date night for you and your sweetie? Some waterproof panniers? Fenders? Local art for your walls? We've got it all! Join us at the 2007 SFBC Winterfest Auction, Member Party and Fundraiser and check out the goods before you arrive. There is sure to be something for everyone. Don't miss the photo booth! & the Extra Action Marching Band!
Winterfest, the SFBC's biggest bike party of the year, is looking for over 100 volunteers to make it happen. Volunteer your help in advance to distribute posters and prep auction materials or volunteer at the event doing everything from valet bike parking, silent auction monitor and welcoming attendees. All volunteers receive complimentary admission to Winterfest and the undying thanks of the SFBC. All interested people should sign up in advance.
Green the Green Festival with the SFBC
Inspire attendees of the annual Green Festival to green their commute by supporting bicycle advocacy with an SFBC membership. SFBC Volunteers get free entry to the Green Festival! We will be doing SFBC Outreach and Valet Bike Parking Friday-Sunday, November 9-11 so we need lots of help to fill in those shifts. Contact Kate if you would like to do Outreach (trained members only, please), or contact Lisa Ruth to do Bike Valet.
Wednesday is Volunteer Night
Our semi-weekly Volunteer Night is back this week with lots of busy activity! Join us this Wednesday, October 24, from 5-8pm for assembling bike lights, labeling postcards, and packaging mailers. Volunteer Night is a great way to meet awesome, like-minded folks, and make a difference while you are at it. Dinner is provided, as well as bike parking, so bring you bike up with you! No need to RSVP, just stop on by. Contact Kate with questions.
After-School Bike Program Hiring
The SFBC is proud to partner with the Presidio Community YMCA on a successful after-school Bike Club program. Now, the YMCA is looking to hire a staff member to help run this great project for middle-school kids. Think you'd be a good fit? Check out the job description here and apply by the end of this week.
East Bay Bicycle Coalition to Celebrate Swank New Digs
The new East Bay Bicycle Coalition office is next to the Fruitvale BikeStation (at BART) and everyone is invited to join the opening celebration during Dia de los Muertos on Sunday, October 28, 10am-5pm. Of course there will be plenty of free bike parking at the BikeStation. They have plenty of furniture and office equipment needs, so stop by to help them gauge their needs. EBBC intends to use the visible storefront location to sell maps, T-shirts, periodicals, and interesting gear not available in local shops.
Bike-o-vations: Instant Air Anywhere?
Now, there is still some scientific question as to the effectiveness of this automatic (and parasitic!) bicycle pump, but it sure is funny. Supposedly, with it you can "fill your bicycle wheels with conveniently available pressurized air stored in automobiles." But, does it work? Hmmm, check out the comments...
