SFBC Biker Bulletin
February 10, 2009
"It's a small increase, but it's a very positive step in the right direction. The board was very astute and they recognized that cyclists were just not buying what Caltrain was saying about removing all the seats at the bottom of the Bombardier cars."

Join the SFBC for The Big 56 for Bikes on February 17th
Our most important campaign is upon us and we need your help to win it. The EIR on the Bike Plan should be complete this Spring, which means 56 bike improvement projects--and more--will be up for approval by City decision-makers. And just because that bike lane or bike parking project is listed in the Bike Plan, doesn't mean the City will go ahead and implement it. That's why we need your help these next few months to help us win everyone of these projects. We will be forming teams to gather signatures, talk to neighbors and gain support to make sure that all 56 projects of the Bike Plan get approved. We simply cannot do this without the help of our 10,000 members. If you want new bike lanes, if you want safer streets, if you're frustrated by the 2-year stall in bike improvements -- Join us now to win The Big 56 for Bikes!
Mark your calendars for this important all-member meeting and kick-off for The Big 56 for Bikes campaign on Tuesday, February 17th (at 6:30pm) at the First Baptist Church (22 Waller Street at Octavia/Market). Find out how easy it is to get involved and leave with concrete tasks to help win more bike lanes. Even if you only have 30 minutes a week, or an hour a month, every little bit will count to win this campaign. It'll be a big push to get all 56 projects approved and legislated by Bike to Work Day, but we know we can do it with your help. Now is the time for you to get involved and help us with The Big 56 For Bikes--our biggest push yet for bike lanes and safety projects.
Bike and Pedestrian Stimulus Funds in Jeopardy. Call Now
After a long battle, the Economic Recovery Bill is almost done and bike and pedestrian funding looks shaky. We need you to call Federal Representatives today and tell them you want to see bike, pedestrian and transit funding--not more highways! (Read Rep. Earl Blumenauer's (D-OR) recent article on Huffington Post for more background). After both houses pass their versions, they have to go into committee to hammer out the differences--and they are pretty big differences. Only the House bill includes funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects.
Please take a minute now to call the following leaders and ask them to support what is being called "transportation enhancements" for bikes and pedestrian improvements. Mention that you are an SFBC-member and remind them that biking and walking are green forms of transportation that help the environment and build healthy communities.
Senator Barbara Boxer 415-403-0100
Please make this important call today for "transportation enhancements" for bikes and peds..

Caltrain Victory: More Bikes, Less Bumps
Months of advocacy and organizing by the SFBC's BIKES Onboard team has led to a significant win for bike and rail on Thursday when the Caltrain board unanimously approved immediate improvements to Caltrain's onboard bicycle service including growing Bombardier bike cars from 16 to 24 bike slots and growing Gallery bike cars from 32 to 40 bike slots. These capcity changes should be in place by April. The Caltrain Board also committed to plan for bikes onboard as an important, central service--one board member went so far as to characterize cyclists as Caltrain's highest form of passengers. Caltrain staff has also been directed to prioritize 2-bike-car trains for peak-hour runs.
These latest commitments are a move in the right direction, but they don't get us where we need to be. Unfortunately, the number of bike spaces per train will still vary unpredictably from 24 to 80 due to inconsistency in the number of bike cars per train. The SFBC will continue to advocate for more space for bikes and no bumps. Learn more about the BIKES ONboard project and how you can get involved to help win more bike space!
