Recruit Your Friends to Bike on Gas-Free Fridays
Starting Friday, July 9, the SF Bicycle Coalition will be kicking off a month of Gas-Free Fridays to encourage more people to take short trips by bike just one day a week. Get on your bike, grab a friend or coworker, and "fuel-up" at an SF Bicycle Coalition Energizer Station (8-10am) with coffee and snacks to get your Friday rolling. In San Francisco, half of all driving trips are under two miles in length, a distance that's easy to travel by bicycle. And besides reducing energy consumption and climate impact, riding a bike is a fun, smart and easy way to get around San Francisco. See the locations for all the Gas-Free Friday Energizer Stations.
A Better Valencia Street At Last
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is excited to announce that major construction on busy Valencia Street is mostly complete! The road has been fully resurfaced and the new Valencia Street has wider bike lanes and sidewalks, cafe-style seating, and new tree plantings -- all huge improvements to this vibrant and busy street. Valencia Street has transformed into a better street for everyone and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is continuing our work to bring these kinds of improvements to streets all over the City.
San Francisco Plays at the Mission Sunday Streets
Tens of thousands of people came out and celebrated Sunday Streets in the Mission this past Sunday when miles of Mission streets were transformed into a people-powered party. The SF Bicycle Coalition was proud to play a big part in the success of the event by recruiting and training 200+ volunteers. Mark your calendar to come out and play for the second Sunday Streets in the Mission on July 11 from 10am-3pm. The SF Bicycle Coalition and Presidio YMCA Bike Program will be teaming up along the route to host urban cycling classes, Freedom From Training Wheels and youth biking.

Join our Team for Climate Ride California 2010
We're recruiting riders for the first-ever Team SF Bicycle Coalition on this year's Climate Ride California, September 21-25. Be part of the fun and support the work of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition at the same time! Climate Ride is a five-day, fully-supported bicycle ride from Fortuna to San Francisco, through the Russian River Wine Country, and along the Pacific Coast Bicycle Route -- one of the most scenic coastlines in the world. A portion of the funds raised by members of Team SF Bicycle Coalition will go directly to support the advocacy work of the SF Bicycle Coalition! This "climate conference on wheels" is the largest environmental charity cycling event and also features nightly speakers who focus on bicycle advocacy, the climate crisis, and a clean energy future. Register for Team SF Bicycle Coalition and find out more about our team at http://tiny.cc/teamsfbc.

Video: Bay Area Street Portrait of Terri Saul
Berkeley's Terri Saul's paintings are inspired by her Choctaw-Chickasaw roots and love of biking. In this StreetsblogSF video, we hear about Terri and her daughter Lydia's feeling of freedom and excitement when rolling on two wheels. Terri's paintings incorporate classic Tour de France imagery and Native American designs to create a surreal landscape where horses have been replaced with bikes as 'the new pony.' This Bay Area Street Portrait is one in a series created by filmmaker Charlotte Buchen highlighting how biking shapes and improves people's lives throughout the region.
