Bike the Vote Tomorrow
VOTE THIS TUESDAY NOVEMBER 2ND! The success of the Bicycle Coalition's work and the future of bicycling in the City relies on electing bike-friendly candidates to the Board of Supervisors. The Board votes on citywide issues, so it doesn't matter where you live -- the people who get elected tomorrow will be voting on important issues in your neighborhood. If you have some spare time, please volunteer -- your work could literally make the difference in these close races. You can stand on a corner with a campaign sign and smile; you can call supporters to get out to the polls; you can help make sure people know where they need to go to vote and more. Call the campaign of your choice and say "I'm an San Francisco Bicycle Coalition member -- what can I do to help?"
New City Goal: 20% of Trips by Bike by 2020
Last week, the Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted Board President David Chiu's resolution calling for 20% of trips by bike by 2020. The adoption of this goal is a crucial milestone toward the city efficiently and economically increasing transportation capacity to accommodate the growing numbers of people who will be living and working in our city. Our Connecting the City initiative maps out a series of continuous, crosstown routes that are designed for people of all ages and will be the key to helping more people take trips by bike to reach 20% of trips by bike by 2020. Connecting the City lays out the plan for a smart and affordable investment in our bicycle network that will help guide the future of San Francisco's streets and help ensure that the city is an easy place to shop, commute, live and play for the one million people who travel around the city every day.
Bike Share On Its Way to San Francisco
Last week, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission voted to fund a regional bike share program for San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties -- the first regional bike sharing program in the country. Bike share pods will be located along key corridors like San Francisco's Market Street and at major transit hubs. The initial pilot will launch with 1,000 bikes in 2011 with 500 of those bikes here in San Francisco.
Market Street -- You're Being Heard
Over the last few weeks we've asked you to write to Mayor Newsom to ask him to complete the separated bikeway on Market Street. Hundreds of you have sent moving letters about what the project would mean to you. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Your letters are having a big impact at City Hall, and the SF Bicycle Coalition is working on ensuring that the emotional impact translates in to actual results on the ground. If you haven't already sent a letter, you can still add your voice. They're making a difference. We look forward to having the City's action plan to share with you soon.
