SFBC Biker Bulletin
November 22, 2011
"Distributing the lights directly to riders allows us to not only ensure that bicyclists get the word that being properly visible is the law, but also to inform more bicyclists about what they can do to be safer on the streets."
Biker Bulletin News
It's been a great year for bicycle advocacy, and in this time of thanks, we wanted to express our gratitude to you, our 12,000 members, for making 2011 an incredible year. You helped us get new bikeways approved, parklets installed, and Proposition B passed. We couldn't have made such incredible strides without you.
An Open House You Can't Afford to Miss
Thanks to thousands of members who have attended community meetings and sent in support letters for projects in 2011 -- you've been essential in moving many bike projects forward. One of the most important community meetings of the year is coming up on December 3rd, as the SFMTA holds an Open House to discuss options for improvements to the three blocks of Fell and Oak Streets between Scott and Baker.
Check Out This Year's Winterfest Auction Items
Winterfest is December 4th, just a few short weeks away. One of our favorite parts of the event is the art auction. This year, we have 50 amazing local artists donating their work, including Dave Eggers and Andrew Schoultz. Check out this year's complete art auction list here. Thanks to the Art Show Curatorial Team led by Lisa Congdon for this year’s spectacular show!
Let There Be Light
The SF Bicycle Coalition is proud to partner with the SF Municipal Transportation Agency to distribute lights to people who are biking after dark without them, and lighting them up with a free set of lights. We were out twice last week and distributed hundreds of lights, along with tips for safe night riding in three languages. If you would like to be one of our light station heroes and install lights on Wednesday, Nov. 30th, Thursday, Dec. 8th, or Monday, Dec. 12th, 5-7pm, please email Tessa to volunteer. The locations are being kept under wraps in an effort to light up riders who truly need them.
Here's How We Can Get 10 More Miles of Bikeways in 2012
We have so much to be thankful for in bicycle advocacy in 2011 -- from a total of 34 miles of bike lanes now on the ground to successfully passing Proposition B for smoother streets!
Tired of Turkey? Eat Pizza!
On Tuesday, November 29th Patxi's Pizza in the Marina will donate 10% of all sales to the SF Bicycle Coalition! This includes all dine-in, take-out, delivery, and gift card purchases throughout the day. We did a similar promotion back in July and it raised a whopping $460 dollars for bicycle advocacy. Yay pizza (and no more turkey and mashed potatoes)! Please note that this fundraiser is only taking place at Patxi's Marina location located at 3318 Fillmore Street. Check them out at patxispizza.com or give them a call at 415-345-3995. Click here to view this location's delivery area. Enjoy some pizza and donate to the SF Bicycle Coalition's goal of 10 new miles of bikeways in 2012!
More parklets Coming to San Francisco's Streets
Many Parklets have already been built in neighborhoods around the city, adding more places to sit, bike parking, greenery and even public art to make our streets more pleasant places to bike and walk. Wish there was a parklet in your neighborhood? Good news! The Planning Department is accepting permit applications for more parklets until December 5th. To apply, download the application and email firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible to inform them of your intent to apply, or take it to your favorite neighborhood cafe or business and tell them why you'd like to see a new parklet on the block.
Family Biking Classes and More
Thank you to the many parents, parents-to-be and, yes, babies, who participated in our Family Biking Class series over the past few weeks. We've enjoyed talking with all of you about how to ride comfortably and safely with your most precious cargo! For those of you with school-age children, keep your eyes peeled for information about our upcoming Bike to School Day poster contest, which will open December 1st. We're tremendously thankful for being able to be a helping hand to the large and growing number of families who bike together, including to school and in bike trains around the city. You, and all of our members, are making our city a better place with every pedal. Thank you!
Save the Date for Bicycle Ambassador Training
Bicycle Ambassador trained members get exciting perks, like free tickets to music festivals. Interested in volunteering to talk to others about our work at events like Bike to Work Day, festivals, and Service Stations? Not trained yet or haven't been in a few years? Join us for this training. Learn ways to engage people, how to sign up new members and celebrate bicycle advocacy! Contact email@example.com to RSVP.
Looking for Great Interns
Do you dream of transforming San Francisco's streets into even greater places? Do you like to get things done and see the results of your work on the ground? The Great Streets Project is looking for talented and motivated individuals to join our team. As a Great Streets Project intern, you'll help build support for great streets and get projects like parklets on the ground. Do you speak Spanish? Ability to translate materials into Spanish and other languages strongly desire. Read more about the Street Project Internship and how to apply.
Video: Supermarket Street Sweep
On Saturday, December 3rd dozens of San Franciscans will be riding around the city for the 6th Annual Supermarket Street Sweep. Riders race between local supermarkets, loading up their cargobikes with donated food, hoping to be the first across the finish line and with the most food. All food donated and money raised benefits the San Francisco Food Bank. Last year 171 racers raised 6,920 lbs. of food and $4,877! This video shows 2009 winner Jeremiah Ducate as he pedals to pick up a whopping 962lbs of food! Check out the Supermarket Street Sweep website and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
