Cyclists used their own pedal-power to bring their household toxics (computers, cell phones, paint) out to the SF Recycling & Disposal facility on the SFBC's Tour de Toxic Waste. Stay tuned for more Cycle & Recycle OpportunitiesWhat is the SFBC's Cycle and Recycle Program? Why do you bike? The cool breeze, the fun, because bicycling is sexy? All these reasons? Many of us also pedal because bicycles are a key element in solving one of the most pressing environmental threats of our time - global warming. With 40% of greenhouse gases caused by transportation, bicycling is a quiet statement against the destabilization of our planet's climate.
But can we, as bicyclists, do more to slow the warming of our planet? To further the campaign against greenhouse gases, the SFBC is launching a Cycle and Recycle program. Our goal is to encourage and educate about ways we all can do more to stop the epidemic of global warming. One of those ways is reducing, reusing, and recycling - everything from energy to yesterday's lunch. Throughout the next year the SFBC will be working with members to get out information about reducing, reusing, and recycling. Watch for tips in our weekly email, the Biker Bulletin, and our member newsletter, the Tube Times, on what to throw in the trash. Check out SF Environment's website to increase your own knowledge about what can be taken out of the dumpster. Most city cyclists have heard of San Francisco's goal to reach 10% of city trips by bike by 2010. A lesser known fact is that the city of San Francisco has another ambitious goal: Recycling 75% of waste by 2010. Can you help our fair city reach both of these goals in the next three years?
