Renee Rivera, acting Executive Director

Former chair of the SF Bicycle Coalition Board of Directors, Renee Rivera will be acting Executive Director, beginning April 2010, while Leah Shahum is on Sabbatical. Renee has a long history working with the Bicycle Coalition, from her long tenure on our Board of Directors, her hard work leading the winning campaign for bike lanes on Polk St., to the numerous cultural history bike tours she has led for the Bicycle Coalition. Renee has a strong background in nonprofit management and leadership roles and is passionate about our work to improve San Francisco for bicycling.

Jodie joined the group in March 2005 as the SFBC's Membership & Outreach Director. Before the SFBC, she worked in direct marketing, volunteer coordinating and community building for a variety of organizations. Full of passion for the city, she has a desire to make San Francisco a better place to live. More bikes! Jodie has a BA in History from Clark University.

Andy Thornley, Program Director

A former chair of the SF Bicycle Advisory Committee (the Board of Supervisor's advisory committee for bicycle planning and programs), Andy currently serves as president of TransForm (formerly TALC, the Transportation and Land Use Coalition). He's also a Founding Roustabout with the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival, mounting its 7th annual festival in February 2010. Andy would like you to have a great ride and please use your bell.

Frank Chan, Operations Director

Frank previously worked at Oracle, Extricity, and most recently as Engineering Program Manager for BEA Systems before realizing he enjoyed the ride to and from work more. He now wants every street in this city to be bikeable for his people. After growing up across the bay in Hayward, Frank graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with BS and MS degrees in computer science.

Kate McCarthy, Membership & Volunteer Director

Kate joined the SFBC Staff as Membership and Volunteer Organizer in September 2006. She has a long history of volunteer organizing and grassroots activism as a founding volunteer of Radio 1190, a Ladyfest Bay Area organizer, and Alemany Farm Volunteer Project Leader, among others. Kate also taught Middle School for four years in Oakland. Kate built her all-pink bike with help from her friends in the San Francisco cycling community and loves bicycles both as efficient transportation and for their beauty as simple machines.

Neal Patel, Community Planner

Neal joined the SFBC in September 2007 as Community Planner for Treasure Island. He earned a BA in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University, and subsequently spent two and a half years doing HIV prevention volunteer work with the Peace Corps in Madagascar. He previously worked at Stanford researching the experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS throughout California. Since moving to San Francisco in 2005, he has become heavily involved in transportation planning and in promoting the bicycle, including assisting in the creation of the "Bicycling and Walking in the US" report with the Thunderhead Alliance.

Teri Gardiner, Communications Director

Teri joined the SFBC staff as Communications Director in May 2008. Prior to the SFBC, Teri was as an Art Director and Graphic Designer working with design studios and a range of non-profit and for-profit clients. She received a BS in Journalism from the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minnesota) and a BA in Graphic Design from CCAC. Teri's been riding her bike in San Francisco for more than a decade.

Marc Caswell, Program Manager

Marc joined the staff in September 2008 as Program Manager. Marc previously worked as Media & Communications Associate at Urban Habitat, a regional social and environmental justice organization. He has previously worked in the Florida Legislature and on various political campaigns since graduating from the University of Florida with a BA in Sociology of Religion. Marc rides his bike almost every day and plays hardtop bike polo weekly.

Kit Hodge, Great Streets Campaign Director

Kit joined the staff in April 2009 as Great Streets Campaign Director. Kit has a long and successful history of leading
campaigns for more livable streets. She helped launch the much-lauded
NYC Streets Renaissance Campaign while working at NYC Transportation Alternatives, where she also served as Campaigns Director and Events and
Membership Director. She then did similar work at the Metropolitan
Planning Council in Chicago, then founded and directed her own nonprofit, called the Neighbors Project.
Here in San Francisco she is the vice president of her neighborhood group, the Duboce Triangle Neighborhood Association, where she is leading a
traffic-calming project that will expand and improve pedestrian and bicycle space.

Jason Serafino-Agar, Safe Routes to School Coordinator

Jason joined the staff in August 2009 as Safe Routes to School Coordinator. Jason has worked in the field of experiential education for the last 14 years, specifically focused on bicycle and pedestrian safety education programs since 2001. He has worked for the Marin County Safe Routes to Schools Program, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance of Oregon, as well as developing
bicycle and pedestrian safety programming in California, Arizona and Wyoming. He also worked with the Bicycle Coalition to develop the Presidio YMCA Bike Program.

Leah Shahum, Executive Director
Executive Director, Leah Shahum, is currently taking a sabbatical starting May 2010 to live, learn and bicycle (everywhere) in Amsterdam, returning in January 2011.
Leah Shahum has served as Executive Director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition since 2002. For four years prior, she was the SFBC's Program Director. Before coming to the SFBC, Leah worked as a journalist for a local newspaper and a national magazine. She graduated from Duke University in North Carolina with a degree in political science and a focus in women's studies. Leah most recently served on the Board of Directors of the SF Municipal Transportation Agency. She previously served for five years on the 19-member Board of Directors of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway, and Transportation District. She is also a San Francisco representative to the state Democratic Party. |
