Meet Ann, One of Our Newest Barter Member-Volunteers

Meet Ann, who first wanted to become an SF Bicycle Coalition member for the great discounts you get around town, but then realized our advocacy work is why she’s enjoying more new bike lanes all around the city. Ann became a member through our Barter Membership program after volunteering with us for ten hours.

What made you start volunteering with the SF Bicycle coalition?
I started to volunteer because I wanted to become an SF Bicycle Coalition member. I noticed a small sign at a grocery store offering a discount for SF Bicycle Coalition members. That was the seed for motivation to become a member. Every time I shopped at that store, I kicked myself for not being a member. I then poked around the website, and I realized the SF Bicycle Coalition advocates for the improvements in the bike lanes in SF which I so much appreciate. I feel so much safer biking on the wider green lanes.

What has been your favorite volunteer moment?
My favorite moments have been meeting other friendly members and sharing projects as well as treats together. Recently we made some bike-themed Valentine’s Day cards. It was fun and made me feel like a kid again.

What do you do with your spare time when you’re not donating your time to the SF Bicycle Coalition?
I try to keep myself fit and healthy by biking, hiking and swimming. Sometimes I volunteer at other organizations.

Tell us about your experience completing a Barter Membership.
I heard about the Barter Membership program from the SF Bicycle Coalition website. Bartering for the membership was a rewarding experience. I felt more connected and it is always interesting to meet other members. It allowed me to get to know the Bicycle Coalition. In the end, bartering is win-win solution if you have the time.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering with us to earn a Barter Membership?
My advice would be to look at your calendar over the next three months and see if you are free on the Volunteer Nights. Regarding Phone Bank, don’t be intimidated! You are just calling other SF Bicycle Coalition members, most of whom are friendly. The Phone Bank hours are counted as double which helped me a lot.
